About the Los Angeles Athletic Club
Founded in 1880, the Los Angeles Athletic Club has been a cornerstone of the city’s social and athletic life for over a century. Its home, a landmark 12-story building completed in 1912, offers a state-of-the-art fitness center, indoor pool, basketball court, squash courts, and specialized training areas. Amenities include an upscale spa, fine dining restaurants, and three floors of hotel rooms for members and guests.
LAAC is as diverse as the city itself, with members of all ages and from all walks of life. In addition to its athletic facilities, the club hosts multiple social clubs, such as a book club, writers group, two choirs, hiking and running groups, and more. The club also maintains private meeting rooms, co-working spaces, making it a premier destination for both fitness and networking in Los Angeles.
About the Athenas Women’s Chorus
The LAAC got its first chorus – the Apollos – in December 1932. Six women in the club founded their own group in 2000, quickly attracting 30 members. Their first performance was to sing the national anthem at the John R. Wooden Awards Banquet that spring. The size of the group is capped at 60 — three sections of about 20 sopranos, mezzos and altos — and today there is a waiting list to audition. The two concerts per year typically feature a mix of holiday, pops and show tunes. Theresa Jolley, our retiring music director, has been in that role since 2015, and she previously served twice as the group’s manager.
